X refuses India's request to block 8,000 accounts

X has rejected India’s demand to block over 8,000 accounts within India, including those of international news organizations and high-profile users.

Global administration Affairs account of X in India has been blocked by Narendra Modi’s terrified administration. This happened as a result after the platform X rejected India’s demand to ban some 8,000 accounts.

These accounts were partially blocked by X. India is the only place where they are blocked; everywhere else in the globe, they are available.

A post was shared by the official Global Government Affairs account, which has over 541,000 followers and embody the voice of X’s government engagement team, The Global Affairs Account said in a statement:

“For a significant number of accounts, we did not receive any evidence or justification to block the accounts. To comply with the orders, we will withhold the specified accounts in India alone. We have begun that process.

However, we disagree with the Indian government’s demands. Blocking entire accounts is not only unnecessary, but it also amounts to censorship of existing and future content and is contrary to the fundamental right of free speech.”

Even though, it was not clear in the post specifically when the request was made by the Indian government, but it seems that the demand was issued during the recent boost in tensions between the two nuclear-armed nations.

Many social media accounts and YouTube channels have already been blocked by the authorities. The accounts belonged to Pakistani news outlets and prominent personalities. This action widely shows Indian Governments desperate attempt to curb free speech and restrict the right to information.

They also added:

“X is exploring all possible legal avenues available to the company.
Unlike users located in India, X is restricted by Indian law in its ability to bring legal challenges against these executive orders. However, we encourage all users who are impacted by these blocking orders to seek appropriate relief from the courts.”
