Official news account of OpenAI on the social networking platform X was hacked for a cryptocurrency fraud on Monday night, which is a worrying development for the AI community.
The popular @OpenAINewsroom account has 54,000 followers. The account of OpenAI was hacked and was used as a platform to advertise a bogus cryptocurrency token. The account is usually used to share company updates.
The now-deleted post made misleading claims about how it will “bridge the gap between AI and blockchain technology” in order to promote the “$OPENAI” token. The misleading statement claimed that all OpenAI users would be able to participate in the token’s first supply and that owning the token would allow them to participate in upcoming beta programs.
A link to a website was placed in the post, posing as OpenAI’s official page to give legitimacy to the hoax. However, because the URL was not the original openai.com, more users were alerted.
Users would be diverted to a bogus immitation of OpenAI’s official homepage, upon clicking the link. It had a claim the $OPENAI cryptocurrency button that required you to link your wallet to the fictitious website. It is very discouraged for users to link their wallets to these kinds of websites or services.
Neither OpenAI nor the social media network have said anything regarding this. No public statement has been made about the incident by the hacked @OpenAINewsroom account. As of now, no posts or remarks have been made to explain the clear security violation.
It is notable that the affected account was a new account and was only introduced to the platform earlier this month.
