With a new feature, Meta-owned messaging behemoth WhatsApp is giving its users more choice over download quality of data as well as data storage and usage.
With the use of this feature, users can decide between “standard” and “HD” quality for automatically downloaded material.
With WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.25.18.11, users can choose whether receiving images and videos are saved in “standard quality” or “HD quality.” This feature is now accessible to a small group of beta testers. The Storage and Data settings of the app provide the option.
Details reveal that this upgrade fixes one of the most frequent issues with the app: the deluge of high-resolution media in group chats, which strains phone storage and data plans.
When users share HD media, the app now employs a dual-upload method in the background. A file is uploaded in both regular and HD formats (end-to-end encryption prevents server-side compression). Smart, huh? The recipient’s app then downloads the version that corresponds to their pre-selected preferences.
With this new feature of WhatsApp, you can explicitly request the HD version from the server if you would rather download media in standard quality by default but wish to view it later (as long as it hasn’t expired).
High-resolution enthusiasts may still maintain sharp visuals with this upgrade, which is especially helpful for people with erratic connections or restricted data plans.
There will be some waiting ahead as WhatsApp intends to make this capability available to all users in the upcoming weeks. Beta testers are already benefiting from more intelligent downloads in the interim.
