Government Cuts IT Ministry Development Budget by Nearly Half, Endangering Tech Sector

Despite promoting the IT sector, the federal government has chosen to cut the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication’s development budget by 43 percent for the fiscal year 2025–2026.

The allocation for projected development for the IT Ministry is Rs. 13.52 billion, which is Rs. 10.4 billion. According to the budget documents from It Ministry, it is less than the last year’s allocation of Rs. 23.92 billion.

The remaining Rs. 9.88 billion of the proposed allocation is expected to come from external finance, while Rs. 3.64 billion coming from domestic sources.

The substantial cut runs counter to the government’s prior claims that the IT industry is a major engine of economic expansion.
