Experts Warn Against Daily 100% Mobile Charging

Smartphone users have been warned by experts from prestigious U.S. institutions not to charge their smartphones to 100% every day, since charging mobile phones everyday can gradually reduce battery life.

According to Dr. Chao-Yang Wang, Director of Penn State University’s Electrochemical Engine Center, a battery that is completely charged daily degrades more quickly.

He said:

“A battery will degrade faster if you charge it to 100% versus a little bit lower state of charge. Charging your phone up to 100 percent consistently can reduce the battery’s lifespan by 10 to 15 percent compared to stopping at 90 percent.”

Associate Professor Debaprakash Dutta of the New Jersey Institute of Technology echoed this worry, pointing out that a phone battery is subjected to high voltage stress when it is kept fully charged.

He stated:

“High voltage over prolonged periods is harmful to lithium-ion batteries.”

Even though, users can find the concept of a fully charged phone appealing, the experts highlights that there is a price for this behavior.

Wang declares that charging the device to 100% is not strictly prohibited, particularly in circumstances like travel where additional battery life is required. He did, however, advise that charging the battery to only 85–90% is ideal for daily use.

Battery deterioration is also influenced by temperature. Wang noted that high charging temperatures, particularly when using fast-charging technologies, can hasten battery cell breakdown over time.

Heat is produced during fast charging, and the effects may be worse if the mobile battery is also charging to 100% under hot conditions.

Dutta further cautioned people against letting their batteries run completely dead.

Dutta advised:

“Instead of waiting for your phone to completely die, plug it in when the battery reaches around 20%.”

It’s interesting to note that a lot of people change their cellphones for reasons like cracked screens or poor photo quality rather than battery difficulties.

However, adopting wise charging practices may help prolong battery life and lessen the need for untimely replacements.

In summary, experts advise a balanced approach to phone charging, which can extend the life and functionality of your mobile device. This includes avoiding both 100% and 0% extremes, charging in cool locations, and using fast charging infrequently.
