Microsoft Notepad got a Significant Upgrade

A significant upgrade to Microsoft’s Notepad program has turned the once-rudimentary text editor into a more potent instrument with generative AI capabilities. Users who currently have an active subscription to Copilot Pro or Microsoft 365 can access the new capabilities.

The most recent update adds a new “Write with Copilot” feature that lets users create original content right in Notepad. You can use the functionality by using the Ctrl + Q shortcut or by right-clicking inside the text field. When a prompt is entered, Copilot produces text in response.

The output can be further improved with follow-up prompts, providing a more engaging and customized writing experience.

Here is what it looks like.

This improvement expands upon the previous Rewrite tool, which let users employ AI to improve or reword preexisting content. Users can now instantly produce original text from scratch without ever leaving Notepad thanks to the new “Write” feature.

Additionally, Microsoft is adding AI capabilities to other essential Windows apps. A generative sticker tool has been added to the Paint app, allowing users to produce original drawings in response to written prompts.

Users can choose specific areas of an image to modify with a new object select feature. Only Copilot+ PCs, including several models from HP’s most recent laptop lineup, have these functions.

Sniping Tool was also updated. A new Perfect snapshot feature eliminates the need for human editing by automatically cropping and resizing screen captures with the use of AI. This capability is exclusive to Copilot+ hardware, same as the Paint improvements.

Nevertheless, all users have access to a recently introduced Color picker tool that shows the HEX, RGB, and HSL values for each color on the screen.

Microsoft’s beta testing network, Windows Insiders, will be the first to have access to all new features. Later updates will bring full availability to the broader public, pending membership access and hardware compatibility.
