Google started selling its famous hardware products which includes Pixel phones, watches, and headphones, directly online in India on Thursday, which is earlier than the anticipated debut of its first physical storefronts in the South Asian country.
The new tab-owned company, Alphabet (GOOGL.O), said that it has let Indian users to make direct online purchases on the official Google Store website for the first time. Currently, the company offers its goods in India through Flipkart, an e-commerce site supported by Walmart, and authorized retailers.
Apple (AAPL.O), a major competitor in the high-end smartphone market, has opened a new tablet. It now sells its phones directly to Indian consumers and has retail locations in Mumbai and New Delhi, with more to come.
According to a February Reuters story, Google is almost ready to choose where in India it would set up its first actual retail outlets outside of the US.
By presenting its own products in its physical storefronts, Google aims to emulate the retail strategy that has helped Apple Inc. (AAPL.O) generate billions of dollars over the past 20 years. Apple has more than 500 locations across the globe.
In India, high-end Pixel phones range in price from $360 to $1,900. The price range for Apple’s iPhones is from $520 to $2,100. Additionally, Google has begun producing Pixel devices such as Pixel phones, headphones, watches in India.
According to predictions from research firm Counterpoint, Apple held an approximately 55% share of the local market for high-end phones (those costing more than $520) in 2024, while Pixel just had a 2% share.
There are presently 712 million smartphone users in the Indian market.
