Despite the original plan to eradicate the National Information Technology Board (NITB), the decision to continue operating the agency under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication (MoITT) was accepted by the federal cabinet.
According to the Rules of Business 1973, the green light was issued, after it was officially asked by the MoITT that the previous decision be reviewed and to keep NITB under Ministry of IT.
As part of administrative reform, the government’s Rightsizing Committee resolved to do away with the NITB last year. The NITB’s centralized role was to be eliminated under the proposed plan, which called for each department to handle the procurement of IT hardware and software autonomously through its own procuring agency.
The MoITT, however, argued in a summary that the NITB is still an important organization for advancing digital governance efforts in Pakistan and urged the federal government to reconsider the shutdown.
The efforts of board to establishing digital platforms, automating government operations, as well as giving technological advances to federal agencies were recognized by the ministry.
In order to streamline and unify IT operations in the public sector, the Electronic Government Directorate and the Pakistan Computer Bureau merged to become the NITB in 2014.
An act of Parliament in 2022 gave it autonomous status, granting it operational and financial autonomy as well as a governing board made up of representatives from the public and private sectors.
