WhatsApp Will No Longer Support These Phones

Meta will start to phase down support for outdated smartphones starting from June 1, 2025 and WhatsApp will no longer support certain phones. This move will potentially deprive millions of WhatsApp users of the popular messaging software.

The modification comes after WhatsApp updated its compatibility policy, pointing to the necessity for more sophisticated operating system capabilities and security concerns.

The changes will go into effect on June 1st, while they were originally scheduled for May. WhatsApp will be no longer to devices that cannot update to at least iOS 15.1 or Android OS 5.0.

This affects a number of outdated smartphone models, such as Android smartphones that are unable to update past the 2014 OS version and iPhones that were released before to 2014.

Among the phone devices that are not suitable with iOS 18 are, the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. In the same manner, Android devices such as the Sony Xperia Z, HTC One X, and Samsung Galaxy S III are also becoming harder to find.

As stated on official FAQ page of WhatsApp, outdated phones that lack the most recent security upgrades or essential features will no longer support the program, according to Meta.

Users who had out-of-date software started receiving alerts from WhatsApp telling them to update to more recent versions of iOS or Android in order to keep using the service. Users who are unable to update because of hardware constraints will no longer be able to use the app for calls and chats.

The iPhone 6 was previously deemed “obsolete” by Apple, which means that even third-party suppliers are unable to acquire parts for it, and it is no longer eligible for official repair or service assistance.

Users that use older devices are instructed to look for software upgrades and switch to a supported device if it is required. Users who are not affected can keep using WhatsApp as usual.

The reliance of WhatsApp on contemporary technology and software is growing as the program develops to offer more sophisticated features. Legacy devices will no longer be supported by these updates. These updates are meant to improve security, user experience, as well as performance.
