Pak-China Fiber Optic Cable Connectivity Project has Started Today

On Friday, The current Caretaker Prime Minister retired Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk inaugurated Pak-China Optical Fiber Cable Connectivity project and put into service at a ceremony in Islamabad. This Fiber Optic Cable will connect Pakistan with China through Khunjerab.

Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Prime Minister of Pakistan Nasirul Mulk, Chinese Ambassador Yao Jing, Special Communications Organization (SCO) director general, Huawei Middle East Region President Charles Yang, and Inspector General Information Technology Deputy General Humayun Aziz was present at the inauguration ceremony.

According to experts, it is a huge fiber cable project linking both countries with an altitude of 4,700 meters.  It is also a side project of CPEC. The caretaker PM said the project would go a long way towards further developing telecommunication infrastructure in northern areas of Pakistan as well as along China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The cable will be extended to Gwadar, fully connecting Pakistan and China.

The structure of the project started back in March 2016 and it was finished by June 2018. SCO and Huawei worked on this project and after all the efforts it is at last accomplished. The cable will operate and maintained by Special Communication Organization. The total predictable cost of the project was $44 million and 85% of the finance was provided by the Exim Bank of China.

According to ProPakistani, the PM officially inaugurated the project and the first live video call to SCO’s office in Khunjerab was made during the event. A souvenir of the day was presented to the PM by IG Communication and Information Technology.

The Pak-China Fiber Optic Cable covers a distance of 822 kilometers. From Rawalpindi to Karimabad there are 26 microwave transmission nodes and from Karimabad to Khunjerab there is 171 km of aerial fiber cable. The major purpose to make this link is to directly connect Pakistan with the Middle East, East Asia and to increase the quality of connectivity, noise, and interruptions. The project will also be favorable for the telecom and IT industry of Pakistan.
